Critters Up Close at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum

Every month, Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum visitors get up close and personal with some of our favorite critters from the natural world.   Join us for hands-on activities and a meet and greet with critters from 10-4:00 pm on Saturday (with a mid-day “Animal Naptime”) and 1-4:00 pm on Sunday.  This month This month the featured critters are hawks and falcons, and they are ready for their close up!

Nature Storytime - Stories in the Snow: Brrr! It's Cold!
Wednesday, December 12, 2018 - 10:00am to 11:00am
Ages: 2-5 years old with a caregiver
$5 per child ($4 per child for members), adults and siblings under 2 years old are free

Nature Storytime has many opportunities for you and your little one to explore and appreciate the outdoors, such as live animal visits, hikes, stories, and hands-on activities. This week we will explore the differences between warm and cold. (This theme may swap with 12/19 if there is snowfall.)

Nature Storytime takes place Wednesday mornings and every other Sunday for one hour. Each session includes indoor and outdoor activities – so make sure to dress for the weather!

Parents' Night Out @ LSNC: Wild Winter Woods
Saturday, December 15, 2018 - 5:30pm to 10:00pm
Ages: Youth currently enrolled in K-6th grades
$30 per child ($25 per child for members)

It's a night out for grown-ups while the kids enjoy an exciting evening at LSNC. Explore how animals survive in winter and test your own survival skills through games and challenges. Meet an expert hibernator up close and personal. Parents’ Night Out includes a Panera sandwich box with PB&J or Turkey as well as a late-night popcorn snack. Families are welcome to send their child with a dinner from home. Activities will be outside as much as possible, so please come dressed for the weather!

Fireside Fun- A Good Old-Fashioned Campfire Circle
Sunday, December 16, 2018 - 6:30pm to 8:00pm
Ages: All ages
Free

There's nothing quite as relaxing as sitting around a campfire, roasting marshmallows and swapping stories. One Sunday a month, we'll be stoking the fires here at LSNC. March-November, we'll provide a blazing outdoor campfire and plenty of marshmallows. Bring your family, friends, camp chairs, outdoor games, and s'mores fixings. December-February, we'll have an indoor fire with hot cocoa and tea. Bring a blanket to sit on, board games to play (we'll have some too), and sledding gear if there is snow. Outdoor fires are held rain or shine (except for thunder and lightening), so come dressed for the weather.

Winter is a wonderful time for a one-day camp where you’ll track mammals, explore the feat of hibernation, and discover how these furry animals survive cold Michigan winters. Experiment with how animals stay warm, keep hidden, and find food in a winter woods! Every LSNC camp includes opportunities to play silly games, make art, spend time outside, and meet some of LSNC’s resident animals up close.

Day Off Outdoors: Trails and Tales
Tuesday, January 1, 2019 - 8:30am to 5:30pm

Get ready for a one-day camp filled with animals, fun, and friends! Follow clues on the trail to uncover a story as you explore the great outdoors. Then, write and illustrate your own stories and play theatrical games as you tell stories about Black Pond Woods and the creatures that live there. Every LSNC camp includes opportunities to play silly games, make art, spend time outside, and meet some of LSNC’s resident animals up close.

Day Off Outdoors: Winter Survival
Wednesday, January 2, 2019 - 8:30am to 5:30pm
Ages: Youth currently enrolled in grades K-5

Learn about how animals survive in winter by caching food, finding shelter, and preparing to hibernate. Then, practice skills that humans use to stay safe and warm when adventuring in the cold outdoors during this one-day camp. Every LSNC camp includes opportunities to play silly games, make art, spend time outside, and meet some of LSNC’s resident animals up close.

Day Off Outdoors: Food Web Frenzy
Thursday, January 3, 2019 - 8:30am to 5:30pm
Ages: Youth currently enrolled in grades K-5

Join us in this one-day camp to discover the many ways plants and animals are connected in our local food web. We'll play games, look at animal habitats, and visit LSNC’s resident wildlife to explore the roles they play as producers, consumers, recyclers, and scavengers. Every LSNC camp includes opportunities to play silly games, make art, spend time outside, and meet some of LSNC’s resident animals up close.
