Frequently Asked Questions Camp 2020

Why can’t you just delay the start of the 2020 Summer Camp Season or cancel part of the summer?

As our team worked through numerous scenarios, two things became clear to us. The first is that we believe in science, and the science is telling us that COVID-19 is not going away any time soon. With the high number of campers, parents, staff, and daily visitors on our property during Summer Camp, we believe that the risk of transmission of this virus will remain high. We cannot in good conscience put all of you at risk.

Additionally, the amount of time that it takes to hire and prepare our staff for an amazing summer with your children is not insignificant. Because we don’t have a firm “return to normal” date, it is logistically impossible to prepare for an unknown future start date, particularly due to the rigorous staff training that must be accomplished to maintain our camp license and ensure a safe and wonderful experience for your child. Factors well beyond our control, both known and yet to be determined, weighed heavily in our decision-making process.

Will I get a refund?

Yes, you will receive a full refund. Because our administrative staff is working remotely, this will take longer than normal. If you are in a position to donate all or part of your registration fees, we would greatly appreciate your support so that we can continue to care for our wildlife ambassadors, our staff, and ensure that when we re-open to the public, we can do so on as stable financial footing as possible. Your charitable donation would mean a lot to us. Thank you so much for considering this request – it really would mean the world to us. If you were registered for camp, you should have received an email with details on how to claim your refund and indicate whether you are able to provide a charitable gift.

Will you be offering any programming instead of camp?

In place of our standard summer camp we will be offering a new program called Camp-at-Home. Our top priorities for any of our camp programs are to create opportunities that get kids outside and focus on engaging children in hands-on science, and this summer is no exception. Our intention for Camp-at-Home is to provide fun and creative ways to do this with very little screen time and with as little required parent involvement as possible. We’re working hard to make sure this brand-new program meets your expectations and hopes, so be sure to look out for the full announcement and registration soon!

Camp-at-Home sounds interesting, but I am in need of childcare for the summer. Do you know of any options?

We appreciate that families participate in camp for many reasons, including having a safe and reliable place for your children every day. If you are an essential worker, you can go here to find opportunities for childcare.

My kids are at home, are there any good opportunities to help them keep learning before summer?

We are currently offering a great roster of programs and resources for families to support their child's at home learning. Find out more about our STEM at Home initiative on our website.

Can I save my spot now for the 2021 Summer Camp season?

Unfortunately, no, as our systems are not set up to do so at this time. However, we will contact you to offer you priority booking along with our members before we open registrations to the general public next year.

If I have further questions, how can I contact you?

Questions and concerns regarding our camp programs should be directed to Camp Leadership: 734-205-9531, camp@aahom-lesliesnc.org.

Thank you.

Thank you so much for your patience and support during this unprecedented time. We are heartbroken that we will not be seeing your child this summer. Until we do see each other, please take care of yourselves!
