Incredible Insects
Sweep through the prairie and probe the woodchip pile in
search of insects, spiders and other arthropods. Explore and
discover the lifecycles, adaptations, and habitats of these
incredible insects. 6 legs, antennae, and 3 body parts: Do you
have what it takes to be an insect? Visit our hissing
cockroaches in the Critter House
and see for yourself. Fall and spring. 1.5 hours.
Appropriate
for grades 1-5.
tremendous
trees
Discover the tremendous world of trees as students use
their bodies and imagination to build a tree from the inside
out. Working in a small group we will hike through the forest as
tree detectives, investigate the requirements for plant growth
through a maple seed mix up game and learn to identify these
amazing forest sentinels using a dichotomous key. 2 hours.
Appropriate
for grades 1-5.
beaks,
feathers, and talons
Discover what makes our feathered friends unique by
observing our live birds of prey up close. We'll learn
about bird specimens and special adaptations. Students will
experiment with beak design, play running games to understand
food chains and the difficulties of migration. Using binoculars,
we'll put our field observation skills to work during a nature
hike. 2 hours.
Appropriate
for grades 1-5.
exploratory trip to the
black pond
Investigate the habitats of native plants and animals on
a hike through our beautiful woods. Walk out on our floating
boardwalk to discover who is living in the pond with nets and
containers. You may see pond animals from salamanders to fairy
shrimp, viewing the smallest on our video microscope. Activities
may include identifying habitat components, simulating food
chains, and playing an animal classification game. 2 hrs.
Fall and spring.
Appropriate
for grades 1-5.
let the sun shine
Ponder producers and contemplate consumers as students explore
the pathways of energy in systems that range from food chains to
solar panels. Through hikes, games and scientific investigation
students will discover complex interdependencies and ways that
people can reduce
their environmental impact by collecting power from the sun. 2
hours. Appropriate for grades 2-4.
population puzzles: math
in real life
Students will investigate animal and plant populations by
setting up study grids and plotting their findings. Students
will also explore the natural and sometimes unnatural rise and
fall of populations through games, graphing and probability
studies. 2 hours. Appropriate for grades 3-5.
Animal Behavior
Could you survive as a fox, rabbit, or roly-poly?!
Test your adaptation skills as we explore, observe and discuss
behaviors that enable animals to survive. We’ll take a hike,
walking in fox's feet, and make survival choices along the way.
We'll stop in the Critter Room and, depending on the season, we
pay a visit to the wood chip pile searching for tiny organisms
to round out the animal behavior experience. 2 hours.
Appropriate for grades 3-5.
Early
Native American Life.
Experience a year in the life of early Michigan Native
Americans. Travel back through time as students explore the
culture and traditions of the Anisnabe people through hikes,
games, crafts and more. 2 hrs. Appropriate
for grades 3-5.
Walking
the Wetlands
Starting at Furstenberg Park, join us for
an exciting exploration of wetland plants and animals as we walk
beside the Huron River. Along our journey to Gallup Park,
students will conduct scientific observations, play games and
travel through various wetlands, including the wet meadow and
cattail marsh, discovering the functions and importance of
wetlands to wildlife and humans. (Entrance to Furstenberg Park
is across from Huron High School on Geddes Road.) 2 hrs. 30
student limit. Appropriate for grades 3-5.
Orienteering
Learn how to read and interpret maps and compasses and
bring math to life! Using newly-acquired skills, students will
follow a series of compass bearings and clues in order to solve
the animal mystery. This program is available in the fall and
spring and has a 30 student limit. 2 hours.
Appropriate for grades 4-8.
Challenge Course
Looking for a way to help your students work as a team
and develop positive life skills? Put them up to the Challenge.
Trained facilitators will challenge students to cooperate,
communicate, problem solve, and work together. With a
little imagination students may cross a peanut butter swamp,
swing across a pit of bubbling acid, slip through a giant
spider’s web or rescue endangered animals. 30 Student limit.
2 hours. Appropriate for grades 5-8
