Visits to Health and Wellness Centers
Using birds in therapeutic treatment dates back to 18th century England. Florence Nightingale famously carried a rescued owl in her pocket while she nursed her patients. Natural scenes and environments have a positive effect on your patients, their families, and your staff’s health, and you’re likely already working to introduce natural spaces into your facility. Leslie Science & Nature Center’s Health Ambassador Program can help you extend your efforts even farther. Our thoughtful educational approach and innovative birds of prey programs can draw people into the natural spaces you’ve already — thereby making them more effective. Our majestic birds captivate and attract people's attention. They create helpful distractions, and introduce a compelling unique grandeur because people rarely get the chance to see such creatures up close. The birds’ permanent injuries are metaphors for hospital life. They improve peoples’ empathy for themselves and others. Our programs introduce a meaningful subject and give people a moment, an occasion, and an experience that transports them beyond their current moment and into the natural world. The birds improve the environment in which people work, learn and heal.
Our Wellness Through Nature department offers Animal Assisted Activities and Animal Assisted Therapy programs. The Ambassador Programs assist health and wellness practitioners/professionals in improving human health and well-being through positive interactions with our birds of prey. Facilitators are AAA/AAT certified.
