Birds of Prey Visit Your School

There is nothing quite like viewing one of our wonderful birds of prey, up close, to excite young minds! 

What you need to know:

  • Duration: 1 hour.
  • Grades: K-12. See specific program info below.
  • The program requires an open floor space with a six foot minimum distance between the audience and presenter.
  • Programs must be held in a room in which there is on other activity being held.
  • Programs may be held out side if there is sufficient amount of shade.  Please chat with the scheduler to decide on the best location for the birds and the audience.
  • A six foot table is needed at the front of the presentation area.
  • An adult is required to remain in the room during the length of the program to help with management when needed.
  • We will arrive early to set up. For the health of the birds we will expect to start on the decided start time, please be specific when scheduling.  If the program begins after the 15 minute grace period an additional feed of $25 will be charged.
  • We are bringing live birds, and if there is a health issue with one of the birds requested, a substitution will be made.  
  • Cost: Based upon distance from LSNC and the size of audience.

PROGRAMS

Hunters of the Sky (Grades 1-12, 1 hour.)
It’s all about survival! Three engaging raptors (e.g., hawks, owls and falcons) will visit your site to demonstrate and model their amazing survival characteristics and techniques. Hands-on explorations of feathers, skulls and other bird parts provide a stimulating introduction to the Hunter of the Sky.

Night Crew (Grades 1-12. 1 hour.)
Allow our owl visitors to engage, delight and educate your students. Classification, conservation and survival techniques are but a few of the topics explored through live birds, activities, and hands-on explorations. Students will discover what it is like to be a nighttime predator.
Key Concepts: habitats, adaptations, life cycles, conservation, food webs, classification.

Silent Feathered Friends (Appropriate for preschool-kindergarten. 45 min.)

Young students let their imaginations take flight as we spin and owl tale. After the story, students enjoy hands-on experiences with our specimens and meet a native Michigan owl. **Program price begins at $120,please call for details**

Natures Recyclers: Vultures, Rats and Roaches (Grades 4-12. 1 hour)
Learn to love nature’s unhuggables with a visit from our vulture, rat, and roaches and discover the important role of scavengers and recyclers in our everyday lives.
Key Concepts: habitats, adaptations, life cycles, conservation, food webs, classification, decomposers, scavengers, recycling.

Threatened and On the Edge: Endangered or threatened? (Grades 4-12. 1 hour)
What is the difference and how does it happen? Through a brief and engaging powerpoint and live bird demonstration participants discover how species can become in danger of extinction. We’ll focus on what humans can do to prevent loss of species, learn about laws currently in effect to protect species, and discuss how our world benefits from the varietyof wildlife inhabiting the Earth.

Adaptations for Flight (Grades: 4-12. 1 hour)
See sdaptations in action when a raptor flies through your gym! Observe physical structure, feather type and wing shape to determine various ways these predators fly, soar, and dive to survive. Students will also have the opportunity to observe survival characteristics of two other raptor family members. 200 student limit, gymnasium required. Limit 2 programs in 1 day.

Physics in Flight
What better way to learn about Newtonian Physics than to watch it in action. LSNC will bring at least two raptors to your field or football stadium to demonstrate physics of motion principles. Students will use velocity guns, tape measures, stop watches and an altimeter to gather data while LSNC will provide follow up lessons to helping the students bring the experience to the classroom.
