Kids take action in the Huron River
Watershed with help from the Leslie Science and Nature
Center and General Motors.
Thanks to the generous contribution from General Motors
over 810 students from 4 middle schools in the Huron
Valley School District participated in the GREEN program
this spring. Eighth graders from White Lake Middle
School, Oak Valley Middle School, Highland Middle School
and Muir Middle School monitored the health of the
headwaters of the Huron River. With their results
students took action to make a positive difference in
their watershed. Some project highlights are listed
below. Congratulations on all of the hard work.
Project highlights:
-Water conservation messages were used to decorate a
horse for a horse show.
-Sidewalk chalk footprints with environmental messages
decorated the school sidewalk highlighting how to reduce
our human
footprint.
-Fortune cookies stuffed with environmental messages
were passed out at the school dance.
-Students dressed up as the earth and stood on the
corner of M-59 and Duck Lake Road with "Going Green"
signs promoting
conservation and recycling
-Students created a youtube video

-Students decorated paper bags from Meijer and Kroger
with environmental messages. Bags will be given out to
customers so
when they get groceries they get an environmental message as well.
-Water bottle
labels with water conservation messages. They put
them over the regular water bottle labels and we are
using these
at our Field Day.
-Bookmarks were made and distributed at the White Lake
Library.
-Plastic Bottle Recycling - After students identified
plastic bottles as the largest source of litter at our
site, students designed a plastic bottle recycling
program at our school.
-Single Use Plastics Campaign - Also based on the
knowledge of plastic bottle litter, our students started
a poster board
campaign lobbying against the use of single use plastics and encouraging
students to use alternative ideas.
-Gummy macroinvertebrates
sold to raise money for LSNC. They have made labels for
them that talk about Macroinvertebrates and
how to protect them.
-Decorated trash and recycling cans placed at Lake
Sherwood to reduce the amount of litter present.
