Our Mission
The Leslie Science and Nature Center
is a not-for-profit
organization whose mission is to provide youth with educational experiences that foster understanding, appreciation, excitement and
respect for the natural environment and that also generate responsible
environmental stewardship in recognition of the legacy of Dr. Eugene and
Mrs. Emily Leslie.
Hidden within Ann Arbor is a 50 acre site of fields,
prairies, forest and pond. The Leslie Science and Nature
Center was once a home and laboratory to Eugene and Emily
Leslie, and is now the Leslie Science & Nature Center and Black
Pond Woods. The Center is open for all to explore and enjoy.
The Center is made possible by the Dr. Eugene and Emily Trust
Fund.
We are lucky to have such marvelous partners. In 2006, the
River Raisin Raptor Center in Manchester, Michigan chose
Leslie Science and Nature Center to be the permanent home for
its injured birds of prey. We are thrilled by this this honor
and take the responsibility of caring for the birds very
seriously. All of these birds have their homes in outdoor
enclosures and can be viewed by the public during daylight
hours.
Another important partner is the Great Lakes office of National
Wildlife Federation (NWF). NWF is helping us, as a
fledgling non-profit, with fundraising, human resources and
staffing, and computers for the next three years. This
tremendous support gives us the time we need to put policies in
place and raise sufficient funds to enable us to go out on our
own by the time the partnership expires in 2011. We hope to
continue to collaborate on educational programs with NWF even
past the formal partnership.
