Meet the staff

David Clipner
Wildlife Curator and Chief Naturalist

David is a lifelong learner who holds an elementary education degree from Eastern Michigan University, and has previously studied everything from philosophy to welding & fabrication. After 6 years as a Bassist in the Marine Corps Band he moved to Michigan to start new adventures. He keeps his fingers wet in the music world by teaching sound engineering at Washtenaw Community College and playing locally from time to time. When he isn't baking bread for the Ypsilanti Co-op you can find him in the woods playing with critters. You only get one life that we know of, why would you want to keep all the wonderful things you learn to yourself? What a waste that would be.

Contact him at 734-994-1692 or david@lesliesnc.org.

Paige Coghlan
Program Coordinator

Paige was a long time science center camper as a child, and more recently a summer camp volunteer. She spends all of her free time on camping trips throughout Michigan. Since obtaining her major in business administration she has plans to attend Michigan State University in the fall to pursue her degree in Environmental Economics and Policy.

Contact her at paige@lesliesnc.org

Erika Doroghazi
Program Coordinator
Erika is a native to southeast Michigan, born and raised in Livonia. Her love for nature and the outdoors developed as a child exploring the Great Lakes state on family camping trips. She graduated from Michigan State University in May 2012 with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies and Agriscience with a concentration in Community Engagement and Education. She is excited to continue learning and share her passion for the natural world at LSNC. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, jigsaw puzzles, crafts, coffee, and spending time outdoors.

Sarah Gilmore
Raptor Staff and Program Coordinator

In the woods behind her aunt's home, on the banks of the River Raisin, Sarah's love for nature began. She never imagined investigating the forest top to bottom with her cousins would lead her to study the environment and graduate from the University of Michigan. When she's not at LSNC, you might find her playing or watching sports, enjoying a good book, or even playing music. Sarah thinks there is nothing better than a fresh snowfall, hot chocolate, a good laugh, warm brownies, or the boardwalk on Mackinac Island at sunset.

Contact her at sarah@lesliesnc.org.

Saya Iwanaga
Program Coordinator

Bio coming soon.

Laura Jackson
Program Coordinator

Laura studied Spanish and Environmental Studies at Hope College. She will begin a master's at U of M in the School of Natural Resources and Environment this fall 2011 concentrating on Communication, Education, and Behavior and Conservation Biology. She has traveled extensively throughout South America, particularly to the Amazon rainforest and the Galapagos Islands. Ask her about anacondas, monkeys, tortoises, and swimming iguanas! She loves playing ice hockey and eating and cooking international cuisine.

Contact her at laura@lesliesnc.org.

Francie Krawcke
Raptor Program Director

Francie’s dad once asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up. "Happy” was her reply. Little did he know that meant getting a degree from Northern Michigan University, discovering miraculous things in the natural world with kids (of all ages) and working with birds, raptors to be specific. If that isn’t enough to fill the day, Francie can be found either with her dogs, sailing, camping/backpacking or completing a major life goal to visit all the states…just 2 more to go!

Contact her at 734-531-6052 or francie@lesliesnc.org.

Katelynn McDonald
Business Manager

Katelynn graduated from Central Michigan University in 2006 with Earth Science and Outdoor Recreation degrees.  Most recently she finished her master’s degree in Recreation, Parks, and Leisure Services Administration from CMU.  She is new to the team at LSNC and to Ann Arbor, and looks forward to working as the center’s Business Manager while taking in all that this area has to offer.  A native of Michigan, Katelynn enjoys hiking through thick forests, backpacking, and experiencing the changing of the seasons.

Contact Katelynn at (734) 997-1553 or  katelynn@lesliesnc.org

Michelle Mirowski
Program Coordinator

Michelle graduated from Murray State University in Kentucky with her masters in biology. She loves camping, hiking and climbing trees. When she is not outside she is curled up on her couch with a good book or listening to music. Michelle is very passionate about conservation issues in the Michigan area. She hopes to share her love of amphibians with as many people as possible.

Contact her at michelle@lesliesnc.org.

Allison Morris
Communications & Development Director

Allison moved to Ann Arbor in 1992, and while she's aware that doesn't give her townie cred, she loves the city and the environmental awareness here. A life-long fan of enthusiasm and of communities built by people willing to share their passions with the world, she's variously thrown herself wholeheartedly (if not always wisely) into work as a line cook, a retail manager, a record label rep, a nonprofit manager, and a fair use advocate. She spent five years with the Organization for Transformative Works, and 12 years with the public library - both nonprofits formed to preserve the history, legality, and accessibility of creativity and cultures. She talks an awful lot for an introvert, believes in the transformative power of hair dye, and likes her music loud.

Contact her at 734-929-2331 or allison@lesliesnc.org.

Maggie Pennell
Program Coordinator
Pattie Postel
Education Director

Pattie Postel discovered nature as a child in the cornfields and creeks of southern Indiana.  She joined Leslie in early 2012 as the Education Director.  She holds a Masters degree in Parks and Recreation Administration from Indiana University, she has worked for and operated both residential and day camps, she trained child care, youth activities and recreation managers for Army installations worldwide, and developed a youth diversion curriculum.  As a former volunteer within community gardens, she strives to live lightly on the planet.  With her elementary teacher training from EMU, she was an educator within Ypsilanti Public Schools. There she connected the science and math programs to the natural world and became an ardent supporter of inquiry-based education.  Pattie worked for the University of Michigan with the Imagining America consortium, and as the Grants Specialist for the University school-based health centers.  In her free time, she gardens edible flowers, builds giant puppets, creates community soap bubbling events, and herds cats.

Contact her at 734-929-2331 or pattie@lesliesnc.org.

Joe Reilly
Program Coordinator

Joe has been an environmental educator for over a decade, working at Kalamazoo Nature Center and Chicago Park District before joining LSNC staff in 2005. Joe uses his skills as a singer-songwriter to help children investigate and celebrate the natural world. In 2007, with help from staff and campers from LSNC, Joe released a CD of environmental songs for kids called Children of the Earth. In 2011, a new album called Let's Go Outside featured campers from LSNC and students from area schools. Joe's favorite tree is the Bur Oak, Quercus Macrocarpa, and his favorite animal is the monkey.

Karen Rendell
Finance and Human Resources Director

Karen and her husband moved to the Ann Arbor area in 2007. Karen has a B.S. in Park, Recreation & Tourism with an emphasis in Interpretation from Michigan State University. She has worked at various environmental education programs throughout the U.S. teaching environmental education and leading adventure courses. Karen enjoys hiking, biking and gardening.

Alysha Mae Schlundt-Bodien
Marketing Coordinator

Alysha Mae has been volunteering with Leslie Science & Nature Center since July 2011 and is excited to be part of the LSNC team! She is an owl enthusiast who loves playing in nature, DIY crafts, and thrift stores. You’ll find her walking her dog, tending her garden, enjoying live music, and educating others about the importance of public, education, and government community media. Alysha is Communications Chair for the Central States Alliance for Community Media (ACM) & an At-Large Board Member for ACM's Michigan Chapter. Michele Wensman
Volunteer Manager

Michele moved to Ann Arbor from the Seacoast of New Hampshire in 2009 when her husband took a position at the University of Michigan and where both of her children are students.  People often ask, “Does New Hampshire really have a seacoast?“  The answer is yes; it’s seventeen miles long and stunning!  While there, Michele worked at a marine science center where she wore many hats through the years starting as a board member and then working with the day-to-day operations and educational programs at the Center.  An early riser, Michele’s favorite thing to do is wake- up with the songbirds and get outdoors for a walk before the sunrise to enjoy the fresh scent of pine and earth. A few of her other favorites include working in her garden, reading natural history, writing, cooking, yoga, and meditation.

Contact her at 734-531-6052 or michele@lesliesnc.org.

Susan Westhoff
Executive Director

Susan comes to LSNC with fifteen years of non-profit administration background.  Thrilled to be returning to the area where she grew up, Susan is excited to reconnect with the Ann Arbor community and all of the amazing cultural and educational partners in the area. Susan grew up in Canton, MI and graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelors of Music in Trumpet Performance.  She started out her career working with Ann Arbor’s University Musical Society in the Education Department. While the arts remain a passion, she and her husband found themselves spending much of their time outdoors in nature. Susan has balanced these two passions by working and volunteering in both the performing arts and environmental education fields. After UMS, she worked with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and was Executive Director of the Continental Divide Trail Alliance and the Trinity Irish Dance Booster Club. Bringing a deep passion for working with youth, volunteers and cultural partners to her job with Leslie, Susan strives to bring a feeling of community to all her interactions. Susan spends her free time in Ann Arbor with photography, baking, and spending time outdoors with her husband, Jim, and their children, Eleanor and Samuel.

Laurel Zoet
School Program Coordinator

Laurel worked 8 years as a pastry chef before concluding that hiding out inside all day was not for her! What recipe did she use to make a 180-degree career change? Obtain a degree in Parks & Recreation Management from Eastern Michigan University, add a summer season with the Michigan DNR & don't look back!

1.5 years as an interpretive naturalist with the Huron Clinton Metroparks’ Mobile Learning Center helped prepare her for a 6.5 year stay as Naturalist-Programmer for West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation. During her tenure at WBP&R, she developed and taught a wide variety of public nature programs, school outreach programs, and nature themed day camps. Laurel also created, implemented, and managed a one-room nature center called the Nature Nook—home to live animal exhibits and hands-on educational activities for all ages. Since her favorite part of all her past jobs has been school outreach, she is very excited to join the Leslie team as School Program Coordinator. In keeping with her innate desire to rescue the "Charlie Brown" things in life, Laurel is in the process of restoring a 120-year-old farmhouse with her husband Mitch and lives with an ever changing list of rescued animals that currently includes a retired Greyhound named Zoey-dog.
