Meet the staff

Susan Westhoff
Executive Director

Susan comes to LSNC with fifteen years of non-profit administration background.  Thrilled to be returning to the area where she grew up, Susan is excited to reconnect with the Ann Arbor community and all of the amazing cultural and educational partners in the area. Susan grew up in Canton, MI and graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelors of Music in Trumpet Performance.  She started out her career working with Ann Arbor’s very own University Musical Society in the Education Department.
While the arts remain a passion, she and her husband found themselves spending much of their time outdoors in nature. Susan has balanced these two passions by working in, and volunteering in both the performing arts and environmental education fields. After UMS, she has enjoyed working with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and as Executive Director of the Continental Divide Trail Alliance and the Trinity Irish Dance Booster Club.
Bringing a deep passion for working with youth, volunteers and cultural partners to her job with Leslie, Susan strives to bring a feeling of community to all her interactions.  Susan spends her free time in Ann Arbor with photography, baking and spending time outdoors with her husband, Jim, and their children: Eleanor and Samuel.

Francie Krawcke
Raptor Program Director

Francie’s dad once asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up. "Happy” was her reply. Little did he know that meant getting a degree from Northern Michigan University, discovering miraculous things in the natural world with kids (of all ages) and working with birds, raptors to be specific. If that isn’t enough to fill the day, Francie can be found either with her dog Skye, sailing, camping/backpacking or completing a major life goal to visit all the states…just 4 more to go! Contact her at 734-997-1553 or francie@lesliesnc.org.

Pattie Postel
Education Director

Pattie Postel discovered nature as a child in the cornfields and creeks of southern Indiana.  She is excited to join Leslie as the Education Director, with an eclectic background!  She holds a Masters degree in Parks and Recreation Administration from Indiana University, she has worked for and operated both residential and day camps, she trained child care, youth activities and recreation managers for Army installations worldwide, developed a youth diversion curriculum.  As a former volunteer within community gardens, she strives to live lightly on the planet.  As an educator within Ypsilanti Public Schools, she connected the science and math programs to the natural world and is a ardent supported of inquiry-based education.  Pattie worked for the University of Michigan with the Imagining America consortium, and most recently as the Grants Specialist for the University Health System’s school-based Health Centers.  In her free time, she gardens edible flowers, builds giant puppets and herds cats. Contact her at 734-531-6052 or pattie@lesliesnc.org.

Julia Petty
Deputy Director of Communications and Development

Julia is currently a senior at the University of Michigan, finishing her degree in Environmental Science with a specialization in Sustainable Food Systems. She’s also spending this year researching the Farm to School program for her senior thesis. She especially loves working at LSNC because it gives her a break from the hustle and bustle of college life, providing a chance to work hands-on with the Ann Arbor community. She plans to pursue a long-term career in the nonprofit world, hopefully related to her favorite topic – food! She loves to shop at farmers’ markets, grow herbs in creative places at her college home, and cooking and eating with friends and family. She also enjoys winter days spent on the ski slopes, painting and graphic design, summers in northern Michigan, and riding her bike around town.

Karen Rendell
Communications Director

Karen and her husband moved to the Ann Arbor area in 2007. Karen has a B.S. in Park, Recreation & Tourism with an emphasis in Interpretation from Michigan State University. Jessie Maxwell
Camp & Program Director

Not too long ago there was a girl named Jessie -

(Whose family and coworkers agree she can be quite messy.)
She lived in the state of Washington most of her life,
Enjoying the water, the mountains, the tree so rife.
"You can't beat," she said with glee
"standing on the mountains and seeing the sea."
She went to school there, learning to teach kids
while running around outside and trying to keep on their lids.
One day, her family said, "Hon, it's time for a change...
I want to see what's on the other side of that mountain range."
They packed up their things and moved out east.
It was a long drive, to say the least!)
She's a Michigan girl now, playing outside with new friends,
new plants, new animals, new habitats to no end.

Contact her at 734-904-7905 or jessie@lesliesnc.org

Pam Bailey
Critter Room Care Coordinator

Pam graduated from California State University at Humboldt with a BS in Biology a very long time ago.  She has written Environmental Impact Reports in California, and managed the Toledo Zoo Library.  She has lived in several states, moving for her husband's job.  In every place, she was delighted to find new wildlife and new habitats to enjoy.  Pam is married to Ted and they have two sons.

Leanne Chadwick
Development Assistant and Raptor Educator

Leanne moved back to Ann Arbor in the fall of 2008 after living overseas for many years with her husband and their three children. She has a BS in Elementary Education and her work experience includes everything from teaching elementary school to taking African elephants for walks in the bush to rebuilding a school in Thailand. Her love for raptors began at a early age when her parents would pile all of the kids in the car on the weekends and scour the rivers in Kansas and Missouri looking for bald eagles! Leanne is thrilled to work at LSNC because she can share her passion for birds, wildlife and nature with young and old alike! Leanne loves meeting new people, exploring, photography, reading, antiquing, golfing, and being outside! She looks forward to meeting you at LSNC! Contact her at leanne@lesliesnc.org.

She fell in love with teaching kids about nature while interning at the Blue Hills Trailside Museum in Massachusetts. She got her degree in Education and English Literature at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, then taught 3rd grade at the Wilmington Friends School in Delaware. She moved to Ann Arbor, where she lives happily with her fiancé, dog, and cat. Carolyn loves hiking, biking, reading, baking, and generally acting like a kid. Her favorite animal is the opossum.

Dana Burnette
Program Coordinator

Dana is a student at the University of Michigan finishing her degree in Environmental Science in fall of 2011. Originally from the Washington D.C. area, she is excited for the opportunity to teach and continue learning about the great outdoors. Outside of the LSNC, Dana can be found riding horses, fishing, or reading. She lives by the motto of John Burroughs: “Love is the measure of life: only so far as we love do we really live.”

David Clipner
Program Coordinator

David is a lifelong learner who doesn't understand the concept of a "degree". Currently, however, he is finishing up an elementary education degree at Eastern Michigan University and has studied everything from philosophy to welding and fabrication. After 6 years in the Marine Corps as a Bassist in the Marine Corp Band he moved to Michigan to play music and start new adventures. He keeps his fingers wet in the music world by teaching sound engineering at Washtenaw Community College and playing locally from time to time. When he isn't baking bread for the Ypsilanti CoOp you can find him playing with critters in the woods. You only get one life that we know of, why would you want to keep all the wonderful things you learn to yourself....what a waste that would be.

Joe Reilly
Program Coordinator

Joe has been an environmental educator for over a decade, working at the Kalamazoo Nature Center and for the Chicago Park District before joining the LSNC staff in 2005. Joe uses his skills as a singer and songwriter to help children investigate and celebrate the natural world, building healthy relationships with themselves, their environment, and each other. In 2007, with the help of staff and campers from LSNC, Joe released a CD of environmental songs for kids called Children of the Earth. In 2011 Joe released a new album of eco-songs for kids called Let's Go Outside, which also features campers from LSNC and students from schools in Ann Arbor and Detroit. Joe's favorite tree is the Bur Oak, Quercus Macrocarpa, and his favorite animal is a monkey.

Rebecca was born and raised in Ann Arbor. When she graduated from the University of Michigan in Spring 2011 with a B.A. in Environmental Studies, she moved to Chelsea, where she is surrounded by the green spaces that she loves. When she’s not working at LSNC, she works for a local organic landscaping company and for MSU processing data for an ongoing angler survey. She also helps Transition Ann Arbor coordinate ReSkilling Festivals that offer free workshops to allow people to learn low-energy skills in a fun environment. In her free time, she dabbles in a variety of interests too numerous to name.

Rita Clinthorne

Rita has lived in Ann Arbor for 32 years, has three children, one grandchild, and she has been married to her husband Neal since 1984. She has Associates Degrees from Washtenaw Community College and Eastern Michigan University. Rita has worked at Leslie Science and Nature Center since 1991, but also works in the Washtenaw County Parks and volunteers with the Ann Arbor Public Schools. One of her favorite hobbies is photography and she loves just being outside (unless it is 40 degrees and raining).

Sarah Gilmore
Program Coordinator

In the woods behind her aunt's home, on the banks of the River Raisin, Sarah's love for nature began. She never imagined investigating the forest top to bottom with her cousins would lead her to study the environment and graduate from the University of Michigan. When she's not at LSNC, you might find her playing or watching sports, enjoying a good book, or even playing music. Sarah thinks there is nothing better than a fresh snowfall, hot chocolate, a good laugh, warm brownies, or the boardwalk on Mackinac Island at sunset.
