Events - Earth Day Festival
Celebrate our natural world at the annual Earth Day Festival on Sunday,
April 27, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Leslie Science & Nature Center,
1831 Traver Road, Ann Arbor. This free, family-friendly event features
displays from local environmental, non-profit, and governmental
organizations; live animal demonstrations; hands-on activities; live
entertainment; and the newest solar home technology and green building
features. Festivities this year return to Leslie Science & Nature
Center, a beautiful setting that includes a host of natural areas for
visitors to explore. Stop by the registration table and pick up an
orientation map and passport to guide you through the Earth Day
activities.
At 3 p.m., an All Species Parade will wind through the building and
outdoor areas with costumed individuals representing diverse animals and
plants. Interested parade participants may bring their own costumes, or
may make costume accessories and instruments at The Scrap Box activity
table. Free face painting is provided by Ann Arbor Cohousing.
The festival entertainment line-up includes "Bubbleman" Ron Lloyd,
musician Joe Reilly, Sacred Song members Jeanne Mackey & Dale Petty, and
storytelling with Darryl Mickens. The Leslie Science & Nature Center
will offer birds of prey orientations throughout the event. Meet these
healthy, non-releasable birds up-close and discover what makes them
hunters of the sky. Visit Brian Cressman's reptiles and learn about
critters from Beyond your Doorstep's Peter Schriemer.
Earth Day admission is FREE* due to generous sponsorship from Whole
Foods Market, The City of Ann Arbor, ann arbor's 107one, National
Wildlife Federation, and Ann Arbor Cohousing, a resident-developed,
cooperative neighborhood. Pilar's Catering and Silvio's Organic Pizza
will sell light concession refreshments.
The Earth Day event has been planned by the following organizations: The
Environmental Education Network of Washtenaw (EE-Now), The Leslie
Science & Nature Center, National Wildlife Federation, The Clean Energy
Coalition, The City of Ann Arbor, The Ecology Center, The Scrap Box,
Washtenaw Community College, and The University of Michigan Matthaei
Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum.
The annual Earth Day Festival is an experience for youth and their
families to enjoy while discovering new ways to make Earth Day every
day. Come celebrate with us!
